What Did the First Human Eat?
It’s the question that humanity has pondered for centuries. What did the first human eat? The answer, it turns out, depends on the definition of “first human” and your source.
Numerous early human ancestors, such as Homo Habilis, are believed to have eaten a diet that is even today very similar to what some primates consume today. It included a variety of plant-based recipes such as nuts, fruits, woody tubers, and thick stalks. They may have also consumed some small animals, such as bird eggs and insects.
Homo Sapiens, otherwise known as modern humans, likely ate a variety of different things including:
- Meat: Mammoth, bison, and deer meat.
- Plants: Vegetables like cabbage and herbs such as parsley and thyme.
- Fruits: Apples, figs, and dates.
- Fish: Salmon, bass, and trout.
It’s believed that early human diets contained fewer calories and less fat than today’s diets. This could be due to the more limited range of prey available and their need to conserve energy.
While our ancestors certainly did not have the same diets we have today, they likely enjoyed a variety of delicious foods. What the first human ate is hard to say definitively, but it is clear that early humans had access to a number of foods that we still enjoy today.
